Cult Malaysian restaurant Roti King has been slinging out roti canai and assorted Malaysian specials for some years now, and has built a stellar reputation for great Malaysian cooking at very reasonable prices. This reputation has spawned two more Roti King outlets - the Gopal's Corner concession at Market Halls Victoria, and the other an upcoming Roti King at Battersea Power Station.
Roti King, as the name suggests, is based around the humble roti - a flatbread found across South East Asia. Roti literally means 'bread' in sanskrit, and rotis are similar to Indian parathas in that they are laminated and layered with fat (usually ghee) before being cooked.
At Roti King, the rotis are served in various formats. Roti canai come as two regular roti with a choice of kari (curry) alongside, which includes mutton, fish, chicken and regular lentil dal, as well as a vegan roti with dal. Or there's murtabak, which is a filled roti - fillings include lamb, beef, chicken, egg and cheese - which comes with dal on the side as an option.
The roti are Roti King's calling card, but there are other options on the menu as well. There are classic Malaysian rice dishes like nasi goreng, nasi lemak and beef rendang, as well as stir fry noodle dishes like mee goreng and char kuey teow, and a fiery laksa. Finish things off with a sweet banana, coconut or condensed milk roti for dessert.
Unlike the Battersea Power Station outlet, Roti King Euston doesn't take bookings and long queues are commonplace, so get there early to avoid disappointment, or order via Deliveroo or Uber Eats.
