Roti King is a Malaysian and Singaporean fusion restaurant, specialising in serving roti canai, a traditional flatbread dish served with a variety of curries and sauces. This vibrant spot was founded by entrepreneur and chef Sugen Gopal who was raised in Malaysia and owned a restaurant in his hometown of Ipoh before moving to UK.
Roti King began as a food truck business before graduating to a brick and mortar site in Euston in 2014. It has since been going from strength to strength with this Lower Marsh branch being its third outpost. The 50 cover dining room features long wooden tables and minimalist décor to allow the food to shine through with no distractions. Head here for a quick lunch on the go or a casual meal with friends.
Of course the main attraction at Roti King is the iconic roti canai which is made fresh onsite every morning and comes with a range of accompaniments including chicken, mutton, dahl, or fish. There are plenty of other familiar favourites on the menu should you prefer, such as beef rendang and nasi goreng, as well as more unique Malaysian dishes like char kuey teow (stir fried flat rice noodles with egg, prawns and chicken), and kari laksa (egg noodles in a warming coconut curry broth with seafood and tofu).
This Waterloo branch also offers more plant based options than its sibling sites, with vegan options including pulled penang shiitake mushrooms cooked in aromatic spices served with coconut rice. For dessert, if you have any room left, roti features again with sweet fillings like coconut jam, banana, and condensed milk.
Roti King has partnered with canned cocktail company Moth. Complement your meal with classic cocktails or keep it non-alcoholic and try a cup of Malaysian tea served hot or cold.
