The only pub in Merseyside to appear in every edition of the Good Beer Guide since it was first published in 1974, this unobtrusive family-run boozer is naturally a favourite with the CAMRA brigade
and an essential stop-off on Liverpool’s ‘real ale trail’. Six pumps are normally on duty, dispensing the likes of Jenning’s, Marston’s, Tetley’s and regular guests from regional microbreweries.
There’s also a menu of basic lunchtime grub if you want some solids – think toasties, baguettes, curry, burgers and chilli. Squeezing in two cosy lounges and a little snug around a pretty central
bar, it eschews fruit machines and jukeboxes in favour of conversational backroom debates and local banter; they also play cribbage here every Wednesday night and hold weekly quizzes too.
