Quite what The Bard would have made of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s lavish revamp is anyone’s guess, but the new set-up should gladden the hearts of wannabe Falstaffs – thanks to its showpiece Rooftop Restaurant & Bar. Wrapped around the third floor of the building, it makes the most of splendid views of the River Avon & Bancroft Gardens. This is an all-day set-up, delivering pre-show deals, snacks & an admirable ‘little menu’ for kids, as well as a full-on repertoire peppered with seasonal produce. Potted beef with tarragon butter, or scallops with sea kale could precede braised mutton & lamb’s sweetbreads with pressed potatoes & turnip gratin, or market fish with steamed greens & hollandaise. Puds might feature rhubarb & custard, & there’s a decent global wine list, too. The private, 20-seater Round Room is perfect for a midsummer night’s revel or any other social junketing.
