SquareMeal Review of Restaurant Michael Nadra Primrose Hill

Bronze Award

Chef Michael Nadra proved his worth in Chiswick before branching out with this more ambitious Primrose Hill restaurant. Chic urban design sets the tone for his signature eclectic style and fans won’t be disappointed by a menu that showcases creative flavour combinations. Stand-outs on a recent visit included delicate prawn, scallop and chive dumplings in a vibrant green pool of broccoli and spinach velouté and perfectly roasted cod in an intense bisque with ‘sea spaghetti’ and plump Shetland mussels – although the culinary flair shines through right up to classic desserts such as melting chocolate fondant with rich salted caramel. Affordable fixed-price menus, weekend brunch and Sunday roasts are further draws, and there’s also a dedicated martini bar with around 20 different creations – try the chilli-infused ‘hot passion’. The canal-side site ranges over different levels, with the added bonus of an alfresco terrace.

About

Restaurant Michael Nadra is the second restaurant from the eponymous chef Michael Nadra. After experiencing success in Chiswick and feeling nostalgic for his years grilling and preparing meats while working at London’s Michelin-starred restaurants, Nadra returned to Zone 2 with Restaurant Michael Nadra Primrose Hill. Nadra’s aspirations are simple but effective: the highest quality, greatest value modern cookery served in a welcoming but exciting environment.

Located just minutes from Camden Town, the restaurant interiors showcase the best of urban design and contemporary comfort, creating a space that reflects the no-frills, all-skill-style brasserie menu. Vaulted ceilings, exposed brick, and raw concrete suffused with warm lighting create an intimate urban ambience complimented by camel-coloured leather banquettes, smart table settings, and seating at a chic modern bar. Plus, in the summer months, an al fresco terrace is at your disposal.

The Restaurant Michael Nadra menu demonstrates Nadra’s French culinary training, appreciation for global cuisine, and passion for seasonal produce. To start you can graze on nibbles like imam bayildi and prawn dumplings, before moving onto a starter of soft-shell crab tempura or salmon ceviche. Guests can then move onto a selection of main dishes such as a miso black cod with basmati rice, kaffir lime leaf, and crisped onion; seared bluefin tuna with steamed thyme potatoes and salsa verde; or, homemade tagiolini with black truffle and porcini sauce. And if you can save room for dessert a Valrhona chocolate and hazelnut parfait with feuilletine and praline awaits.

Restaurant Michael Nadra also boasts a dedicated Martini bar with variations including a chilli-spiked ‘hot passion’. The restaurant also offers an affordable set lunch menu, a weekend brunch offering, and a Sunday dinner menu. And if you’re looking to bring along a group larger than eight the restaurant provides a three-course menu to suit your party.

Another dinner at this restaurant showed it's still good, with interesting ingredients and good cooking. My starter of broccoli and greens soup with thin crispy crostini was light and pleasant, as was the garden salad with tomatoes, goat cheese and pomegranate, with really crusty rye bread rolls. Our main courses were very good - steamed sea bass with prawn & chive dumplings, bok choy, carrot puree & crab bisque sauce went down well, with a side order of triple cooked chips which were perfect - crunchy outside and fluffy inside. My herb crusted hake with lobster risotto was excellent, with nice chunks of juicy lobster. Dessert sounded too good to miss. The treacle tart with raspberry sorbet wasn't quite as expected, the tart filling being a bit thin and runny though the raspberry sorbet was fresh and zingy. The chocolate fondant with salt caramel ice cream was yummy with plenty of caramel sauce and crunchy caramel chippings with the ice cream. Service was rather slow, we weren't in a hurry so it didn't matter, but did notice at one point that not one table in the room had any food in front of them. Everyone was having a good time though with friends and family so it didn't seem to be a problem, and we'd be happy to go back again.

great food in Primrose Hill
We were a family group of five, all adults, and had 3 courses with aperitifs, wine and port. The food was excellent, well flavoured and interesting. Lobster ravioli and softshell crab tempura stand out starters, steak and pork perfectly cooked, good cheese board and short list of desserts but were very good. Service excellent, attentive without being intrusive. The space is interesting, and we were in an area on our own but the main restaurant area seemed as though it could be quite noisy.
