SquareMeal Review of Rabble Taphouse & Grill

An Edinburgh trailblazer when it opened back in the noughties, Rick’s comprises a small, chic boutique hotel with a stylish bar and restaurant. Other young contenders in the neighbourhood are making their bid for the glamorous limelight these days, but this place still has a deserved reputation for decent cocktails and friendly staff. The restaurant itself offers an eclectic hotchpotch of dishes, although simpler ideas tend to be the best bets – think smoked haddock fishcakes with lime and caper mayo, followed by a steak, burger or confit pork belly, with caramelised lemon tart to finish. If you’re tempted to go off-piste, you might consider corn-fed chicken and chorizo terrine, Thai green curry or carrot and walnut ravioli with pea shoots and pickled walnuts. Fish, cheese and charcuterie sharing boards are also a popular call.

About

Rabble is located in Edinburgh's New Town, providing residents and visitors with delicious options for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. From the bar, you can enjoy a selection of carefree cocktails that are made using an impressive selection of local, Scottish produce and ingredients.

Brunch is served until 3pm and begins with Belgian waffles with either a coconut yoghurt served with berries and honey, or dry cured crispy bacon and maple syrup. The pig out eggs sound totally divine, with rabble sausage patties, BBQ pulled pork and two poached eggs on a toasted muffin topped with hollandaise sauce. To start, try the beer battered bubble prawns with nori seaweed, brown crab mayo and lemon, or the burrata topped with confit tomato and Turkish butter. If you prefer to share starters with the table, try the Italian charcuterie platter of mortadella, milano salami, parma ham, gorgonzola, buffalo mozzarella, picante gordal olives, pickles, bread sticks, fresh baked bread, balsamic and olive oil. There are some marvellous mains, including a tandoori sea bass with Bombay potatoes, baby spinach, tomato, coconut and mint yoghurt, a slow cooked pork belly with garlic hash browns, celeriac, Arran mustard remoulade and cider jus, and a crispy halloumi salad with roast peach, red quinoa and with a chardonnay dressing.

Don't skip on the desserts, and try the shoestring fries, smoked cheddar mac and cheese and sugar snap peas with smoked almond butter. For pudding, opt for the flapjack cranachan with a delicious Scottish raspberry cream and Laphroaig whiskey jelly, or the toasted lemon meringue roulade with whipped cream. A totally delicious cocktail to round off your meal is the sharer Pina Colada Grande, made with Uhuru rum, pineapple, coconut sorbet, dairy cream and pressed lime.
