This Shoreditch restaurant and bar is named after a pickle-stealing monkey found on the owner’s travels in Asia (if you believe it). Pickled Fred seats 50 diners and as the name suggests, pickles and ferments feature strongly on both the food and cocktail menus, as well as lining the shelves inside. A range of Asian-inspired dishes includes snacks, small plates and flatbreads, with plenty of vegan, dairy and gluten-free (chickpea pancakes instead of flatbreads) options available. Snacks include a jackfruit Scotch egg, with masala mayonnaise and root crisps, while small plates feature grilled octopus with harissa-marinated chickpeas, black tahini and pickled red onions, and beef shin and bone marrow rendang with crispy shallots. From the list of cocktails, guests can choose Fred’s Preserver (peppercorn-infused vodka, preserved strawberry and rose petal wine, and Aperol) or Smoking Goat: butter-washed Tequila, mezcal, pineapple, sweet basil and agave.
