Okitchen serves Japanese and Korean food in Didsbury Village, South Manchester. The decor contains subtle nods to these two countries throughout and there is also an outdoor seating area, ideal for the summer months.
The food menu is well balanced between Japanese and Korean dishes. Starters include takoyaki (battered diced octopus), agedashi tofu (deep fried in miso sauce) and tempura prawn, squid, mixed seafood or vegetables. There’s also Korean fried chicken and kani panko (deep fried soft shell crab).
Sushi and sashimi options cover equally large ground. Platters are the best way to sample a range of types. These are either salmon, mixed nigri or vegetable. Rolls can also be ordered individually and feature a line up including chicken katsu, prawn tempuras, spicy tuna and California. Nigri comes in pairs and hosomaki in portions of eight.
For mains, there’s stir fries, Korean BBQ, Korean soup and rice dishes. Stir fry dishes include mushroom gang jung and duruchigi (pork with kimchi and tofu). Various kinds of chicken, beef, pork and seafood make up the barbeque options.
Soup casseroles are traditional Korean family meals and well represented on the menu by the likes of seolleongtang (beef rib broth) and sundubu-jigae (made with tofu). Rice dishes are headlined by katsu curry, available with either mushroom, salmon or chicken. There’s also bibimnap, a Koren rice bowl topped with your choice of salmon, prawn, chicken, beef, pork or mushroom.
OKitchen also operates as a cocktail bar, serving two cocktails for £12 Sunday to Thursday. Drinks in this deal include a lychito (dark rum, pear vodka and lychee liquor) and a Japanese highball.
