About

Obicà Mozzarella Bar Poland Street is an authentic Italian restaurant positioned in the heart of Soho on bustling Poland Street, perfectly located to catch the hordes of hungry Londoners filtering through this historic part of town every day. While Obicà offers a range of dishes across this much-loved cuisine, it somewhat concentrates its efforts in a few areas of speciality.

Indeed, Obicà is actually the world's first mozzarella bar and is incredibly passionate about sourcing and serving the best Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP from selected farms and dairies in Campania, certified by the Consortium for the protection of this very special Mozzarella di Bufala.

Across the menu, you'll find dishes that are topped, enhanced or simply revolve around this gorgeously creamy produce, with two different kinds available. The Delicate mozzarella is sweet and gentle, while the Smoked is stronger and more robust, so remember that when making your choice.

The menu is extensive and spans eight different sections of Italian goodness, many of which - you guessed it - lift up the humble ball of mozzarella. The mozzarella bar section, for example, offers seven small plates of mozzarella to try, while the degustazioni section puts together sharing boards with mozzarella slices alongside walnuts, dates, basil as well as prosciutto and salami.

If you're in the mood for a more typical style of main, might we suggest the pizzas which are all made with Obicà's signature dough prepared with Molino Paolo Mariani flour in a sourdough style, and are slow risen for at least 48 hours for a unique, fragrant taste. Toppings you can expect to see include porcini mushrooms, with Mozzarella di Bufala, pumpkin and 17 Parmigiano Reggiano DOP shavings, as well as prosciutto cotto with artichokes, Mozzarella di Bufala, 17 Taggiasche olives, Datterini tomatoes and Parmigiano Reggiano DOP chips.

As well as food, Obicà is passionate about serving up Italian wine that complements its plates and brings together both renowned wineries and emerging local producers for a well-rounded offering.

By rights I should not like anywhere that calls itself a Mozzarella “Bar” (blasphemy!) but actually it does look rather like somewhere you might have a cocktail with its long bar, the first thing to catch your eye as you walk in, and slightly ‘after hours’ styling. I was on a burrata rather than a booze hunt on the Saturday lunchtime when I came in and it was Mission Successful. The mozzarella was amazing: creamy, light, subtle but not bland. We shared a selection of antipasti (tomatoes, grilled veg including aubergines and courgettes, prosciutto, pesto) and some lovely focaccia bread. Thinking about it I am surprised we didn't have more given that a) that doesn't sounds a lot for a total £53 bill (for 2, including a couple of soft drinks each and a coffee) and b) I am uncommonly greedy and portions were not particularly big (if you're really hungry look elsewhere or try the more expensive mains/pizzas). So perhaps I am forgetting something like a salad but if so, it was obviously not as memorable as the other elements. There isn't anything on this sharing menu that you haven't seen or had before, but it is all well done and very flavourful. Service was lovely, attentive enough but not intrusive, and most of all very patient and unpushy given that we lingered a very long time gossiping over what was not a very high spend meal. Atmosphere-wise I found it a bit lacking as it felt quite empty; I'd have expected it to be busy given it's in a convenient spot close to shopping mecca. Maybe it gets more business in the evenings when people mistake it for a gin mill?
