SquareMeal Review of Nobles Cafe Bar and Restaurant

One of Leith’s most iconic drinking dens, this wonderful revamped Victorian hostelry – complete with ornate stained glass windows and one of the most imposing mahogany bars in Edinburgh – is a Jekyll & Hyde establishment. On Friday and Saturday evenings it’s a high-decibel venue for Leith’s young party crowd, but at other times it’s a spacious, friendly hostelry known for its fantastic food and splendid beer (the Black Isle Brewery produces Nobles IPA specially for the place). As well as pub-grub staples and the odd rabbit burger, the menu might run to seared scallops with celeriac purée, amaranth and sherry vinaigrette, Thai crab cakes or Scottish venison loin with wild mushroom ragoût.

About

If you want freshly cooked, refined classics, then check out Nobles in Leith. This elegant bar-restaurant was first opened in 1896 along with the whisky bonding operation of Archibald Noble, and still retains its stunning stained glass windows and distinct nautical theme. Here, you can hear the echoes of the sea and enjoy tasty food in cosy surroundings.

The evening menu begins with delicious starters, including the soup of the day with fresh sourdough, and whisky cured smoked salmon with a celeriac remoulade. Creamy and indulgent, the rosemary fried brie with house made red chilli jam is a big hit, as is the crispy squid with Asian slaw salad and a hot sour dressing golgappas. The miso glazed roast aubergine sounds super tasty, paired with confit shallots, dukkha, pomegranate and butter bean puree.

For a lighter dish, try the pan fried chicken breast with a sweet potato and lentil dhal, or the chicken caesar salad with brioche croutons, capers and anchovies. On a cold day, you'll want to warm up with the slow cooked braised shin of beef with roast potato mash, smoked pancetta, roast vegetables, madeira and redcurrant jus.

For a mega tasty burger, enjoy the hot honey buttermilk fried chicken in a brioche bun, layered with baby gem lettuce, basil mayo, crispy jalapenos and fries. The Highland venison is an in house special, featuring a 6 oz venison and smoked bacon patty with smokey cheese, haggis, caramelised onions, lettuce and vine tomatoes and Nobles burger sauce.

If visiting during the weekend, enjoy the brunch menu, which includes brioche French toast with plums, creme fraiche and thyme honey, and the Nobles full Scottish breakfast. This hearty dish is complete with sausage, eggs, bacon, black pudding, haggis, beans, grilled tomatoes, mushrooms and toasted sourdough.
