Which restaurants won and lost Michelin stars in 2024? The results are in

The Michelin Guide for Great Britain and Northern Ireland is here for another year, and another round of Michelin stars have been awarded to worthy restaurants. Join us as go through all the new stars and awards from the Michelin Guide 2024.

For years London has been the epicentre of the Michelin Guide’s yearly award ceremony, but this year the guide headed north, holding a live ceremony at The Midland Hotel in Manchester.

The Michelin Guide traditionally was built around luxury and fine dining, but these days Michelin has become much more middle of the road, recognising a much broader range of food of various cuisines, styles and price points. In 2021 Michelin also established a new award - the Michelin Green Star - to celebrate the achievements of great restaurants that are committed to sustainability. Michelin also awards Bib Gourmands each year to restaurants that are seen as being excellent value propositions.

Michelin also gives out a handful of special awards each year, and 2024 was no different. To kick off the awards, Michel Roux Jr came up on stage and made a moving tribute to the recently-closed Le Gavroche and his team, receiving this year's Chef Mentor Award. Young chef Jake Jones from Middleton Lodge received Michelin's Young Chef of the Year. Later on, Kitchen Table head sommelier Sandia Chang stepped up on stage to award Michelin's Service Award 2024 to Robbie Ashby from Stage in Exeter, and the 2024 Sommelier Award to Valentin Mouillard from L'Enclume. Finally, Michelin's Exceptional Cocktails Award went to Ryan McHarg from The Spence in Edinburgh.

The majority of new stars were awarded in London, with some being perhaps more predictable than others. French chef Yannick Alleno, for example, received yet another star from the Michelin Guide for his restaurant PAVYLLON, housed inside the Four Seasons Park Lane. 'Pavyllon London is an embodiment of my lifelong dream to redefine French fine dining,' said Alleno. 'It’s an honour to receive this recognition just six months after opening and a testament to the dedication, creativity and commitment of our talented team led by Chef Benjamin. I am looking forward to what we can achieve in the next six months and beyond.'

Elsewhere in London, Bermondsey restaurant Trivet made the jump from one star to two, and the big news of the night was the addition of a new three Michelin-starred restaurant to the guide, in the form of The Ledbury in Notting Hill. 'It feels incredible to have the team’s talent, hard work and dedication recognised by the Michelin inspectors this year,' said Trivet chef Jonny Lake. 'Thank you to all our amazing guests and suppliers for continuing to believe in our dream.'

New three Michelin star restaurants in Great Britain and Ireland 2024

According to the Michelin Guide, restaurants with three Michelin stars are the pinnacle of food, denoting ‘exceptional cuisine that is worth a special journey’. Three Michelin star status is rarely awarded, but 2024 saw one new three Michelin star restaurant enter the guide. Read more about all the UK’s three Michelin star restaurants - all of which have retained their three-star status this year.

Only a handful of restaurants in the UK have two star-status, which is seen as a considerable step up from a single star and requires a degree of consistency and quality over many years. ‘Two stars elevates your restaurant to be one of the best in the world’ - says Michelin. These restaurants received two Michelin stars in 2024.
