Tap & Run: A pub co-owned by England cricketers is destroyed by fire

A pub partially owned by England cricketers Stuart Broad and Harry Gurney has been destroyed by a devastating fire.

The award-winning Tap & Run pub in Upper Broughton, Nottingham, burst into flames on Saturday 11 June at about 3:20am in the morning. A team of eight firefighters were called to the scene to tackle the flames, with the blaze completely destroying the roof and the first floor of the building.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue service said they believed the cause of the fire to be accidental.

It took eight fire engines to quell the flames with local residents instructed to keep their windows and doors closed while firefighters tried to get the blaze under control. Luckily, despite the ferocity of the fire, no one was injured.

A statement has been announced on the pub’s website explaining that it is ‘devasted’ and will have to close ‘for the foreseeable future’ while it works out how to get back on its feet.

''We are devastated to announce that due to a significant fire in the early hours of June 11th The Tap & Run will not be trading for the foreseeable future.

''We are so sorry that we cannot honour our bookings or take any further bookings. We will keep everyone fully up to date on social media over the next few weeks. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the outpouring of support.

The owners did end on a hopeful note, saying: ''And finally... we will be back! Watch this space.’’

Stuart Broad tweeted on the morning of the fire: "I couldn't believe the news this morning. Not sure I still can. Our wonderful pub caught fire in the early hours. Thankfully no one was hurt, the Nottinghamshire Fire Service were incredible in their efforts and thank you to the villagers for the wonderful support."

He later added: "Thinking of our awesome staff today, every single person there has created a special pub for the community. It hurts right now but we will come out the other side."

The Tap & Run pub, originally called The Golden Fleece, was taken over by Broad and Gurney in 2018 who transformed it into a gastropub.
