Lidl to open pop-up ‘Patisserie Lidl’ selling designer croissant handbag

A few weeks ago, the nation’s favourite bakery released a croissant-inspired handbag. It sold out in just two minutes. Now, Lidl has announced a Dean Street pop-up - Patisserie Lidl - to give disappointed shoppers another chance to buy the cult-status bag, and its muse: the all-butter croissant.

Patisserie Lidl at 55A Dean Street will open between Friday 13 and Saturday 14 September selling flaky Lidl pastries and croissant handbags on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Lidl teamed up with American absurdist designer Nik Bentel to create a leather croissant bag. It mimics a paper bakery bag, complete with a leather croissant-shaped coin purse and a Lidl trolley token. Billed as the ‘it’ bag of the season, it quickly reached viral fame on Instagram and TikTok, with Jordan Stephens of Rizzle Kicks getting involved in the campaign ahead of the group's comeback.

Bentel’s other quirky food-inspired designs, including a leather spaghetti clutch and a penne pasta bag, typically sell for around £250. This limited edition collaboration retails at £50 with Lidl croissants available at their usual price of £0.59. It's not all for social media likes and shares though; proceeds from the pop-up are earmarked for the children’s charity NSPCC - so perhaps viral fame and social media fads can have their merits.

The opening coincides with London Fashion Week, which runs between 12 and 17 September, and there’s little doubt Bentel will be gracing the FROWs. There probably won't be another pop-up, so this is the final call to get your hands on an exclusive croissant handbag.
