Heston Blumenthal has gifted a terminally ill boy his dream meal at the chef's west London restaurant, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal.
Oli Ross, 17, who is terminally ill with a brain tumour, was gifted a tasting menu at the world-renowned chef's two Michelin star restaurant n Knightsbridge. Blumenthal treated the teenager and his family to the eight course meal as part of an arrangement with the charity Taylor Made Dreams.
The charity aims to 'help to leave lasting, precious memories for families to cherish when time together is all far too short' by creating a ‘bucket list’ to spend quality time together through unique experiences, which may not have been otherwise possible
Throughout the evening, Oli worked his way through the menu and was able to try new foods for the first time, like caviar, which he apparently loved. Speaking about the various courses, Oli said: ‘All are great, but my first taste of real caviar was special.’
His mother, Claire, added: ‘So much so, he “stole” mine, too.’
Aside from this, the celebrity chef had also arranged to make a twist on Oli’s favourite dessert, a banoffee pie. To do this, he used his liquid nitrogen machine to create a Banoffee pie flavoured ice cream.
Heston Blumenthal told how he loved being able to host the family for such a special occasion. ‘It was a pleasure to meet Oli and share food with his family,’ the chef said. ‘Moreover, to provide always important family memories.’
Oli, who would like to be a chef himself if it weren’t for his brain tumour, has always been a fan of Heston.
Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, which is located in the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Knightsbridge, offers both an a la carte menu and a chef's table experience. The latter of which would usually cost £230 per head for an eight course meal.
