Fred Sirieix’s charity The Right Course and award-winning hospitality interior design agency DesignLSM are partnering to transform the canteens at HMP Berwyn Prison into a high street-like restaurant run by the prisoners themselves. The aim of the initiative is to provide inmates with the opportunity to gain industry-recognised qualifications and experience that will increase their prospects of employment after their release.
This is not the first time The Right Course and DesignLSM have taken on a prison project together. The charity and design agency previously worked to refurbish the staff canteen at HMP Wormwood Scrubs in West London in 2021, transforming the area into a high-street standard café and restaurant to provide training for learners. The project was funded by the Mayor’s Fund, and officially opened by London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan.
This latest project will see the agency and charity collaborate again to strategically redesign the North Wales prison into an exceptional restaurant and training space. Set to open in May 2023, DesignLSM will focus on delivering a space that facilitates learning while working in harmony with the existing architecture of the building.
The Right Course will again be working with partner and training provider NOVUS Cambria to deliver support, while drawing on its industry expertise and contacts to guide the design, equipment and menus in the new kitchen.
Holly Hallam, the managing director at DesignLSM, comments on the initiative: ‘Continuing our support of this fantastic initiative, DesignLSM are thrilled to be bringing their expertise of strategic planning and immersive design to this exciting project. The Right Course are not only having an incredibly positive impact on the lives of inmates, but they are also tackling the ever-present struggle in hospitality staffing that we are facing with many of our clients. We are very proud to be involved.’
