SquareMeal Review of New Cross House

Formerly the rather grim Goldsmith’s Tavern, the re-invented New Cross House retains some of its original, Victorian gin-palace features (note the wall tiles) in a lighter, brighter space tricked out in 21st-century shabby-chic with bentwood chairs & berry tones. This venue gained a reputation when it was briefly home to much-lauded pop-up burger joint, Meateasy, but it has now taken on new persona as part of the Capital Pubs’ stable. Enjoy a pint of Bonobo, Weasel or Greenwich Meantime in the sociable decked beer garden, with a wood burner to warm up chilly chill sessions. A pizza oven produces admirable thin crusts with a choice of toppings & there are modish bar bites, Asian-style seafood dishes, salads & veggie options for cal-counting yummy mummies – plus jumbo hot dogs, fried chicken & Sunday roasts for their meat-loving hubbies.

The end is nye

The roast was stunning today...but sadly it could not erase the memory of my past roast here where a yorkshire pudding was not included within the standard price. Too little, too late. Auf wee der sein new cross house. And ciao (as in goodbye. Not hello).

Yorkshire pudding now included with a roast

We went for a roast down the road as it was awful here last time. After arriving I was pleased to see they were no longer charging extra for a Yorkshire — the reason why I hadn't been bac (surely this is a standard roast item). Maybe next time I'll get a roast here again.

New Cross House is a joy to visit. The atmosphere is buzzing, especially on a busy night or a summer’s evening when you can take advantage of the spectacular out building and garden. The only downside of the venue is that there is normally one rather frazzled waitress manning the whole operation, and you aren’t allowed to order from the bar. I go regularly and often spend the first half a pint trying to grab her attention to put in a food order. Often it’s easier to just follow her around until she gets the idea that you’d like to eat, or wave your hands frantically in her general direction. I always go for pizza cooked in the wood fired oven in the open plan kitchen. It never disappoints, and normally comes in at £9 dependent on topping. The ground chorizo and pepperoni is a delight, as is the lamb. Best however to avoid the potato, rosemary and blue cheese pizza – it’s just odd. Despite the poor service, the food is great and the portions are fantastic (if a little on the large side). There are a range of wines and beers (the latter mostly local), but don’t expect the staff of mostly Goldsmiths students to be able to answer any questions you might have about the wine list. New Cross needs a pub like this, and New Cross House delivers well.
