About

MOTH stands for Memorable Order of Tin Hats. Founded in 1927 in South Africa as a support network for ex-servicemen, the social clubs it spawned spread to Britain. When, in 2015, Hackney MOTH was set to close, the owners of quintessential Dalston hangout, The Shacklewell Arms, rescued it, recasting the Victorian brick-built hall as a cultural hub for Hackney’s hipsters. The wood-panelled saloon bar (all scarlet plush and crimson-faced codgers) might well be a set for Dad’s Army. While the Moth Club’s drinks aren’t exactly up there with the Ivy Club’s, you’ll find well-priced vino and Truman’s Swift and Runner on tap. Under a refurbished glittering-gold arched ceiling, the shabby original decor and billiards table are mercifully still in situ. The function room hosts gigs, cabaret, casinos, crazy bingo, karaoke, go-go dancers and DJs – thus ensuring a new wave of social butterflies is drawn to the Moth’s flame.
