Morpeth Arms

SquareMeal Review of Morpeth Arms

Built in 1845, this handsome Thames-side tavern occupies the site of old Millbank Gaol. It’s said that the spirits of POMs past (the acronym stands for ‘prisoners of Millbank’) haunt its grim flagstone cellars, protesting about their fate – namely transportation down under. Nowadays, as well as welcoming tourists and Tate Britain visitors, it’s also popular with another bunch that many would gladly see the back of – Westminster policy wonks. To drink, enjoy Young’s cask ales, fine wines and numerous variations on classic bloody Mary; to eat, expect everything from chip butties and hot wings to haloumi, mushroom and pepper burgers, steak and ale pie, grilled haddock salad, crumbles and tarts. A swish upstairs 'spying room' dedicated to Mata Hari looks directly over the river to the MI6 building – so be careful what you say.
