On a street corner in Whitechapel, Maza deals in halal Pakistani cuisine – which means lots of grills, kebabs and sizzling dishes plus some generic curry-house staples such as chicken biryani or dhal gosht. The tandoori oven gets a good work-out and there are special masala curries in two sizes, plus a decent showing of veggie dishes – perhaps karahi saag aloo or palak paneer. Roti and naan breads are an essential accompaniment, and there are two versions of halwa to finish. Expect plain but bright surroundings, with bare wooden tables and chairs, some red banquette seating and the odd decorative artefact on the walls, plus a counter display of snacks and savouries. Maza isn’t licensed, but you’re welcome to BYO booze; otherwise try a jug of banana lassi. Takeaways too.
