About

Replacing Juno on Shoreditch’s main drag, comes Matchbox, a bright, brash bar/diner/urban art gallery on two floors. Lurid neon art, giant candy canes, purple plush booths and shaker-makers inspired by Tom Cruise in Cocktail we fancy, the vibe is 1980s small-town America. A dozen large screens beam in all manner of must-see sporting malarkey, while, under giant glitter balls, you can ‘have a dance on a Saturday night after a successful Tinder date’. Selected 2-for-£10 early-bird cocktails should help in that department. And while the list is not going to trouble the nearby likes of Callooh Callay in terms of sophistication, disco drinks such as Slam Dunk, George Best Zombie and Lovebird (vodka, peach schnapps, blue Bols and pineapple) score highly with a young party posse that will soon move on to Flaming Lamborghini shooters and Glitter Bombs. Punchbowls cost from £35 to £800 for The Champ – that’s a bottle apiece of Dom P 2002, Grey Goose and tropical fruitiness served in a 1950s ornamental tiger’s head, no less! Lad lagers and wine from £14.50 are the things to order with sharing platters, street food, hot dogs, double cheeseburger and Cajun fries.
