SquareMeal Review of Mark Jordan at the Beach

Although Mark Jordan has relinquished his post as head chef in charge of The Ocean Restaurant at St Brelade’s Atlantic Hotel, he still has an interest in this casual eatery overlooking the beach at St Peter – the perfect spot for lazing on a sunny afternoon. Feast on devilled whitebait dipped in a vat of mustard mayonnaise or try the crab bonbons – perfectly deep-fried croquettes with a crab ketchup that’s so good you’ll want to squirrel away the miniature Kilner jar in which it’s served. The star of the show is undoubtedly the whole Jersey lobster with thermidor sauce, served butterflied and resplendent – a glass of the house Champagne is the only accompaniment you’ll need. Two desserts really stand out: the chocolate tart, served warm with an oozing fondant centre alongside almost savoury pistachio ice cream and pistachio dust; and the attention-seeking caramelised banana with dark roasted coffee ice cream. Service is warm, chatty and very knowledgeable – you’ll never want to leave.

truly remarkable
I have had the privilege to dine here on several occasions, all of which were for dinner. I have browsed at the lunch menu's they do offer which is great value for money at £19.50 for two courses and £24.50 for three courses and the menu changes every week so I am looking forward to trying that sometime soon. They also offer a'la carte if you fancy going a little upmarket. The a'la carte menu is also available in the evenings as well as the Jersey market menu which is a set menu at £27.50 and is a choice of one starter, one main and one dessert. All made from the islands top local produce. On each occasion.though I have opted to.dine from the a'la carte menu. The choices of food are remarkable, with lots of fish, meat, salads and vegetarian options to pick from. I'm not going to lie I am not a fan of fish, for some reason the thought of eating fish puts me off but reading some of the dishes almost converted me. I stayed safe though and opted for dishes I know I'd really enjoy. Please note this is just based on one visit, I wouldn't want to go on for days. I had the ham hock homemade piccalilli to start which is just amazing, great combinations of flavours. For main course I opted for the honey roast duck breast served with a caramelised red cabbage and fondant potato, which is by far one of the best dishes I've had in a long time. For dessert I had the crispy thin apple tart with toffee ice cream which they say is one of the popular choices and you can see why. After a meal which was very filling it was perfect, light and flavoursome. In all was a superb meal, great service. The location is by far one of the prettiest you will experience overlooking the bay. Would love to try al fresco one lunch time whilst soaking in the rays and trying the MJ burger which sounds amazing. This restaurant is a must try for anyone, couples, business and families they cover all bases and its well priced. Certainly not expensive like I've seen posted on tripadvisor. Great choice of wines too. A real must try!!!
