SquareMeal Review of Lounge Bar at Lancaster London (afternoon tea)

Take the second star to the right and straight on ‘til you get to the Lounge Bar at the Lancaster, where a themed afternoon tea awaits. Inspired by its proximity to Kensington Gardens’ famous Peter Pan statue, the hotel could tempt anybody back from Neverland with its promise of ‘lost boys’ sandwiches and ‘Mrs Darling’s’ scones. It may sound gimmicky, but tea is taken seriously here: ham sandwiches feature homemade piccalilli and pea shoots, and guests are even offered an amuse-bouche such as spiced pear pot au crème ahead of pistachio macaroons, tropical fruit tarts etc. Tea comes with a map showing directions to the aforementioned statue, plus a pouch of ‘fairy dust’ (ie. bread to feed the ducks). At £22, this is a charming repast served in just-chintzy-enough drawing room surrounds; grown-ups can also channel Tinker Bell with a pink fizz version (£32).
