Keeping one eye on the craft-beer bandwagon, Bier Keller offers 120 different draught and bottled brews from around the world, with esoteric names such as Erdinger Weissbrau, Früh Kölsch, Brooklyn Chocolate Stout, Pauwel Kwak (a potent Belgian) and monastic Rochefort 10 lining up alongside seasonal specials, real ciders and more besides. There’s also a decent choice of wines and cocktails for those who want something different. The place is also famed for its live music (‘Ascension Thursdays’ feature up to 10 different acoustic acts) and there’s a massive widescreen TV for those who want to watch the footie. Lazy types can even pour their own beer at one of the specially designed ‘draught tables’ – just don’t come expecting a quiet tipple and intimate chat on match days. There are now branches in Blackpool and Leeds.
