Hidden away in a 16th-century, barrel-vaulted basement beneath Skipton’s award-winning High Street (best in class back in 2009), Le Caveau lives up to its subterranean moniker with hefty oak beams, rugged stone walls and flickering candles. Although the name is Gallic, chef and host Richard Barker offers a lively mixed bag of international dishes ranging from true Brit classics to Far Eastern combos – all at very reasonable prices. Starters of rabbit and guinea fowl terrine with piccalilli or garlicky mushrooms with Stilton and crispy bacon could give way to suprême of corn-fed chicken stuffed with roast garlic, parmesan and thyme or salmon and prawns wrapped in filo pastry with Thai vegetables. There are Dales steaks too, plus old-school puds including crème brûlée, raspberry pannacotta and double chocolate truffle cake. Cut-price lunches and early-bird deals also please the locals.
