SquareMeal Review of Lamb & Flag

Formerly the Bucket of Blood, on account of the bare-knuckle fights that took place behind its thick walls, this legendary Covent Garden boozer earned its street cred when poet John Dryden was beaten up in the alleyway outside by supporters of Charles II’s mistress, after he assassinated the old trollop in verse. The Lamb was taken over by Fuller’s brewery during 2011, so drinkers who queue patiently at the bar can now expect a full range of Chiswick brews rather than Young’s and other draught beers of old. The food is likely to change too – although it’s unlikely to affect the character of the atmospheric ground-floor saloon with its settles and open fire or the agreeably ramshackle, Dickensian dining room (the novelist was once a regular here).

ok for drinks - food dont bother

I havent been to the Lamb and Flag for ages... used to be an afterwork favoutite.... and I would still recommend it as a drinking pub. Sadly I booked a table of four for Sunday roast...and I cannot recomend. Have you have ever bought one of those Iceland Roast ready meals for under £3, well Icelands are 5 times better. The portion I got was smaller than a kids portion (we mentioned this and they did come out with more beef to their credit, it was served on a side plate and looked just like two trainer inner soles). Our bill was £170 for four below average roasts and two bottles of Merlot. I regretted not booking Gouchos, 2 mins away and it would have been 10x better and the same price. We  had wanted a pub atmosphere but but but but but.......lesson learnt.. it is now just a tourist pub. Surely the Lamb and Flag can do better, even if it is for tourists!

Re-newed....
Well this pub has changed a lot since 2009, it's now owned and managed by Fuller Smith & Turner, a local Chiswick Brewery. The pub is famous for it's untouched historic decor and the renowned Charles Dickens used to drink here too. The food is now very good, with the usual tourist menu with some other very nice specials on the board and the ales are superb with regular changing guest ales from all over London. You have to give it a go...

This is indeed a very charming pub for a drink, but keep away from the food, its the very worst of British food! I made the mistake of taking some friends from France for a Sunday roast here and it was embarrassing! Hard peas, carrots straight from a tin, over cooked beef, boiled cabbage, etc! OMG I thought this didn't exist anymore in 21st century Britain! But I was wrong, bad cooking is still very much a part of our culture it seems, at least at the Lamb and Flag!!
