SquareMeal Review of La Bodega

Bronze Award

Notting Hill’s Spanish community & other devotees of Iberian cuisine are well served in the area around Portobello Road, & now there’s another place for them to get their pincho & paella fix. La Bodega wears its patriotism with pride: a red & yellow colour scheme, flamenco soundtrack & Estrella on tap give this casual eatery the look of a backstreet bar in downtown Valencia. By day, a mixed crowd of Spanish women & local office workers can be found gossiping over cheese or meat platters, or gobbling up tapas-sized portions of albondigas, tortilla & chorizo. Later on, diners are drawn to a range of six paellas, including seafood & black rice versions as well as the classic Valencian recipe. An all-Spanish wine list & big screen TV add to the authentic mood.

Poor , poor service with a side of misogyny
Wouldn't eat here again if you paid me. Which is a pity as their peppers stuffed with black pudding are, like some of their other tapas, perfectly acceptable. The problem comes with the service.Even for a busy Friday night it was incredibly slow. Then comes the problem with the bill. It is heavily stacked with items unordered or undelivered. When this is questioned by a female member of our party the bill is very, very aggressively snatched out of her hand not once, but twice yearly the male member of staff. This when a female member of staff is quizzed, is the shift manager acting in his usual manner. Wild horses wouldn't drag my back.

I love, love, love this place! My friends and i come to La Bodega every Thursday after our Neon Fuel dance classes in Portobello and we have great rioja with FREE olives. Come rain or shine, we feel like we are in Madrid or Barcelona. You always know when you are in an authentic Spanish restaurant/bar when all you can hear is Spanish.

first of all, it is such a shame this “tapas” bar is so well located, it is to me, a very good spot in Portobello market just wasted. i have been twice in this place: first time i did not like the food but i thought it might have been what i ate that day. however, i wanted to give it another go and yesterday my friend and i shared 3 tapas, this was the result: -what they call “chanquetes” is not, they are lying and instead they just serve a completely different fish - the “chorizo” tapa, again, it is not real chorizo, it looks like they buy the cheapest substitute and that is what they serve you, what a piss take - i have to say that the cod croquettes where ok. another thing that called our attention is they could not serve pints because their machine was broken, and as they said, it has been broken for a month and they do not have intention of repairing it. conclusion: very bad quality and tacky.

First time in this lovely restaurant. Amazing Spanish food, you feel like being in Galicia, very nice atmosphere. Definitely recommend it.
