Brought to you by the team behind MAP Maison, La Bibliotheque serves a range of dishes peppered with Mediterranean and Japanese influence in a upscale restaurant with old-world charm. A short walk from cocktail bar MAP Maison, La Bibliotheque has made the historically humble Haggerston its permanent home.
Joseph Arowolo’s newest venture not only showcases high-quality dining but doubles as a boutique hotel resolved to provide unmatched comfort, not just a bed for the night. To this end, La Biblioteque offers its patrons a seat at the incredibly well-stocked bar, a whiskey masterclass, a tasting menu, an outdoor terrace, and a private dining room. The main dining room reflects the Bibliotheque identity, demonstrating design features evocative of a French library. Seating includes leather banquettes, ornate tub chairs, and counter stools at the bar ideal for couples and solo diners alike.
La Bibliotheque's menu balances classic and experimental dishes curated by head chef James Mayle and his team, emphasising the use of seasonal ingredients and fresh produce. The menu marries modern Mediterranean classics with Japanese ingredients. The starter selection includes Japanese milk bread with an array of miso and sesame-flavoured butters; scallops paired with prosciutto and wasabi; and an oyster dish constructed in traditional wanton style with a French-inspired verjus. Main courses include sirloin with ceps and sesame, and duck with plum and shiso. The theme continues into the dessert course with the mingling of beetroot and cherry blossom.
Cocktail master Melissa Frangi has devised signatures that include the Tokinoda - a blend of Ukiyo rice vodka, coconut water, and clarified pandan. Many options feature botanical Japanese sake and liquors such as 135 East Hyogo gin, which friendly staff are more than happy to explain.
