It’s a surprise to find properly authentic Japanese cooking in the heart of one of Britain’s historic cathedral towns, but a trip to Kyoto Kitchen in Winchester will certainly pay off. Specializing is sushi and sashimi, the varadon sashimi plate with seared salmon and seabass and served with a spicy ponzu and wakame sauce is really worth a try. Not to be outdone, the Winchester roll is a speciality worth the chef’s salt with home-grown wasabi used in place of seaweed to give a real kick. There’s plenty to tempt further off the beaten track too such as roasted local lamb chops marinated in white miso and served with quinoa salad, and succulent soft shell crab tempura and duck with a raspberry teriyaki sauce and pineapple. A decent, kindly priced wine list and a really affordable set lunch are further reasons to visit.
