Back in 2016 a UK survey carried out by Halifax bank named Winchester as the best city to live in the UK based on average earnings, health, happiness and crime rates. Indeed, it is not difficult to see why visitors to the historic city fall in love with this tranquil idyll in the heart of Hampshire with its spectacular architecture and quintessential English charm. Just an hour from London by train and surrounded by beautiful rolling countryside, it has become a popular destination for weekend breaks away from the Big Smoke, and on a Sunday many an escaped Londoner can be found wandering the cobbled courtyards, strolling along the River Itchen or perusing the vast array of unique independent shops which thrive here.
Consequently there are now some great places to stay in Winchester too with a whole host of characterful B&B’s to choose from as shrewd locals capitalize on the city’s allure. Similarly the influx of discerning diners from the capital has seen the city’s foodie scene flourish in recent years with renowned TV chef Rick Stein leading the way. Winchester also boasts one of the largest farmer’s markets in the UK with over 80 producers attending twice a month to sell an array of award-winning meat, game, fruit, vegetables, cheese, cakes, honey and bread from across the region.
In terms of accolades The Black Rat has proudly held Hampshire’s only Michelin star since 2011 and Chesil Rectory just a stone’s throw away in a 600 year old Grade II listed medieval house holds an impressive two AA rosettes. Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway for two, celebratory weekend with friends or just passing through for a quick lunch – we hope this guide will provide some inspiration of where to make your foodie stops as you take in all the quaint charm this city has to offer.
