Khandoker Indian restaurant has rightfully earned its place in the Manchester restaurant history. The establishment was originally founded way back in 1937 by the late restaurateur Nazir Uddin, who also ran the popular Manzil Restaurant on Stockport Road in the 60s. These days, Khandoker is as busy as ever, turning out both traditional and contemporary Indian and Bangladeshi food.
The dining room at Khandoker is simple, featuring high-back black leather chairs and tables which can accommodate either pairs or groups. The simplicity of the space allows for the colours and flavours of the menu to really do the talking - it is also worth noting that all of the food served here is halal, and that there are vegetarian and vegan options available too.
Begin your meal with the obvious likes of filled samosas and onion bhajis, or try something a little different such as butterfly king prawns or chilli paneer tikka. Main courses are split between Khandoker family recipes which are said to be over two centuries old and contemporary propositions; the former might see the likes of diced chicken marinated in Tandoor sauce for 12 hours, while the latter features hearty chicken and lamb biryanis.
Traditional curries are also available alongside all of the expected breads and sundries (naans, paratha, chapati, etc.) while a dedicated vegan section will please plant-based diners: choose between saag aloo and tarka dal. If you are unsure of what to order, we would recommend choosing something from the list of chef’s recommendations, where you will find tempting dishes such as Mishti Kodu, a dish which uses a Bengali vegetable that’s similar to swede and is served with your choice of chicken, lamb or prawns.
To drink, there are beers, wines and Champagnes, plus a selection of tea and coffees to end your meal with.
