Rebooted and rebranded, the basement dive bar at what was previously Navajo Joe’s (now Joe’s Southern Kitchen & Bar) is a chilli-toned downbeat ‘Texican’-style hangout whose cocktails are top dollar. Try red or dead (Jim Beam Red Stag bourbon, Cherry Heering and whisk-barrel bitters in blood orange and lemon juice), rum dog millionaire no.2, or Brazilian squirrel (a nutty Frangelico, cachaça, lime and berries hit) – all at £7. There are also around 100 top-end Tequilas and mezcals on offer, along with various sub-£16 wines and American craft beers. To eat, popcorn shrimps, dogs, wings and soft- shell crab buns with pickle mayo, apple slaw and bacon-salt fries are typical calls from a line-up of Route 66 bar food served to a soundtrack last heard on a Chevy Impala’s car radio circa Jackie and JFK.
