Huge, modern and airy, Indian Tiffin Room is run by two brothers whose Cheadle restaurant has won much praise. The polished glass establishment occupies the new First Street development and feels contemporary and charming, with quirky decor, booths resembling rickshaws and a bar fashioned like a shipping container. Authentic Indian street food peppers the menu: chaats, thalis and Indo-Chinese dishes. An appetising selection of small plates includes a vibrant beetroot shami kebab (the earthy purple patty fried in a crisp spiced crumb), and paani puri, whose shells hold an intoxicating filling of potatoes with chilli-spiked, mint-infused water that explodes on the palate. We also relished the masala dosa (a crispy crêpe stuffed with spiced potato and served with spicy lentil sambar), and the signature ITR lamb dish simmered in 15 spices. Desserts are no afterthought (try the fragrant gulab jamun), and neither is the fun and fruity cocktail list.
