Herbivorous was born out of its creators travels across the US, where they sampled a range of delicious vegan foods. Wanting to bring these dishes and ingredients back to the UK food scene, Herbivorous’ owners made their start at a food festival. After serving up food to eager vegans, they realised there was a huge demand for fun, exciting vegan food in the UK. Enter: Herbivorous.
Fast forward a few years, and Herbivorous is a Withington restaurant, serving up exciting plates in an informal setting (there are also Herbivorous pop-ups and food stalls dotted across the country, too). At Herbivorous, everything is made from scratch, with ingredients sourced from local suppliers.
The menu is appealing, full of dishes that will make mouths water and tummies bulge! The Herbi Classics include a fried ‘chicken’ burger, Philly cheesesteak sandwich, and Buffalo wings with fries. Another standout is the Philly cheesesteak loaded fries – seasoned fries topped with (house-made) beef seitan sauteed with onions, peppers, and garlic, and finished with cashew cheese sauce.
If you’re a small plates and sharers kind of person, there’s also something for you. A creamy mac and cheese makes an appearance – there’s a seitan bacon version, too – as do sweet and sour chicken balls, Creole crab fritters, and a ‘Jumbo Cheeseburger Spring Roll’, made of ground beef patty, gherkins, cheese, and white onion, all rolled up into a crispy spring roll and served with special burger sauce. It’s worth visiting Herbivorous even just to see this creation in the flesh…
For some fun drinks alongside your food, you’ll be please to know there are cocktails, beers, wines, and spirits, as well as a selection of soft drinks.
In a nutshell, Herbivorous is a vegan dream that will leave you full for days, after which you’ll definitely want to come back for more.
