SquareMeal Review of Harvey Nichols Leeds - The Fourth Floor Brasserie

Bronze Award

The brasserie situated within the Leeds branch of Harvey Nichols strikes a casual, contemporary pose with its long bar, spectacular rooftop vistas and open kitchen. The interiors comprise a glamorous mix of burnished gold mirrors, statement lighting and teal-toned leather seats that are tailor-made for shoppers and the city’s smart set. A wall of windows provides plenty of natural light and allows diners to gaze out on a striking city-rooftop vista as they tuck into breakfast, lunch or dinner.

On-trend flavours and seasonal ingredients are the keynotes of the concise menu at The Fourth Floor Brasserie, whatever time of day you visit. Breakfast could be anything from pastries and bread-based items (toast, crumpets or an English muffin) to something heartier like a full English or vanilla buttermilk pancakes served with your choice of maple syrup, yoghurt, blueberry compote, berries, vanilla ice cream or streaky bacon.

Later on, perhaps after a day’s hard shopping, you might drop in for a plate of charred mackerel with potato, confit shallot, dill powder and smoked paprika aioli or venison carpaccio with aubergine caviar ahead of pan-fried halibut with kale, fennel and potato crumble, capers and parsley beurre noisette. Depending on the season, you might finish with honeycomb mousse topped with caramelised pecans, crispy filo pastry and passion fruit or a steamed cinnamon pudding with apple, vanilla crème anglaise.

Set menus offer decent value, particularly the vegan set menu (£18/20 for two/three courses) which features dishes such as butternut squash tofu mousse topped with pumpkin seed granola and pickled beetroot; roasted cauliflower with curried hummus, hazelnut dukkah, kale and hazelnut dressing; and coconut ice cream crowned with passion fruit and toasted coconut. There’s also a whole range of snacks on offer should you feel peckish when dropping in for a coffee or a glass of wine from the global wine list.

About

Harvey Nichols needs no introduction, this fashion and lifestyle powerhouse is a glamorous setting whether you're shopping for a new outfit, or luxury food stuffs. And, whether you're planning a special lunch out or simply get peckish while browsing the racks, the Fourth Floor Brasserie at Harvey Nichols Leeds is a lovely place to take up a pew and enjoy a menu of Modern British cuisine using locally sourced produce.

Located at the top of Harvey Nichols Leeds site, the Brasserie benefits from jaw-dropping views across the city. With large windows, the space is flooded with natural light and stunning vistas of the rooftops are all around. In terms of decor, the space feels modern and plush with statement lighting, an eye-catching turquoise bar and sophsticated, neutral seating. Both relaxing and fit for an occasion, it's a versatile restaurant in the heart of an iconic institution.

The menu's concept is seasonal and the chefs take care to work with Yorkshire's best farmers and growers to deliver authentic dishes using the freshest produce. On the main menu, you'll find a selection of starters such as confit pork belly with lemon and parsley cous cous, pickled fennel and harissa red wine jus, as well as white crab meat with mango, fennel and apple salad.

Mains offer something for everyone, from hearty plates like roasted Yorkshire chicken breast with carrot, crispy potato and onions, pescetarian dishes such as grilled mackerel with panzanella salad and harissa potatoes, and vegetarian options like roasted hispi cabbage with Jersey Royals and crispy onions.

The Spring Spritz menu has a similar feel but with some slightly lighter, more summery dishes which are complemented with a limoncello and thyme spritz. Think grazing plates of ham hock bon bons and sun-blushed tomato madeleines with pesto cream cheese, followed by pan-fried sea bass or smoked aubergine, courgette, artichoke and goats’ cheese tagliolini pasta.

We were served by Gavi - Service at it's best - made us feel comfortable and the experience made all the more special because of her.

Friday meet

Fantastic winter menu ,good service but a bit of a wait for the bill and paying this ,had to request twice. Not usually a problem but we had a train journey home.

Busy, buzzy atmosphere but noisy because of the wooden floor and with sitting near the glass window it was difficult to hear at times as little soft furnishings to soften sound.
