A big, brash all-day brasserie right in the centre of Liverpool, Hanover Street Social is tricked out with a regulation mix of bare brickwork, high ceilings, generously spaced tables and a thumping bar for flashy big-city cocktails. Breakfasts of porridge, sausage sarnies and fry-ups get things started before the kitchen moves into top gear for an international menu spanning everything from bang-bang chicken or grilled scallops with tomato salsa and avocado purée to goats’ cheese and sun-blush tomato lasagne or crispy pork belly with Stornoway black pudding, apples and sage. There are oyster ‘shots’ to start things off, and small plates for sharing (ham hock fritters with mustard mayo), while familiar puds range from chocolate brownie to Eton mess. On Monday nights you can get two courses for £17.50 (including a bottle of house wine).
