Fancy a peaceful retreat after a busy day of working, shopping or sightseeing in Nottingham? Check out Griffins Head at Papplewick, only 10 miles from Nottingham and 5 miles from junction 27 on the M1.
This charming British pub boasts an impressive history. In addition to a building estimated to be around 300 years old, Griffins Head is situated in Pappelwick, an area that was once the medieval southern gateway to the iconic Sherwood Forest. The pub holds true to its quintessentially English image, complete with wooden ceilings, exposed beams, three warm fireplaces and even a well in the middle of the venue. There's also a sizeable beer garden for enjoying a cold pint in the British sun.
Here you'll find a sumptuous menu full of pub classics, slow-cooked meats and homely Sunday dinners. If you're keeping it light, bar snacks such as cheese straws and black pudding bites are the ideal accompaniment to your pint. If you're after something heartier, you'll find yourself spoilt for choice between the traditional British plates such as bangers and mash, beer-battered fish and chips, and chicken tikka masala, as well as a range of burgers and steaks. The chicken and ham pie from the award-winning Kentish Mayde comes specially recommended by the chef.
Good news for gluten-free diners: around 90% of the regular menu is available without gluten. Plant-based eaters needn't fear either, as the menu contains several vegetarian options.
Drinks-wise, you'll find all the old favourites either on tap or in the fridge, along with a generous wine list, cheeky cocktails and all the spirits you can imagine.
The food isn't the only attraction. Grffins Head has a jam-packed events schedule, with a range of activities for all ages. Expect lots of local music, a pub quiz every Tuesday and a car show on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month.
