SquareMeal Review of Gold Mine

The Gold Mine’s plain frontage & sparse, white-walled dining room suggest that it’s a quick-fix refuelling stop rather than a place to linger. The menu touts a bewildering array of dishes, but most people are here to sample the Cantonese roast meats – especially the lacquered ducks that can be seen hanging in the window. Chopped up & piled on to plates of steamed rice, these gamey, deliciously fatty birds are immensely popular with the Chinese crowd who frequent this garishly lit eatery. If you’re in the mood for something more esoteric, try braised chicken with pig’s liver & Chinese sausage or go for the chilli kick of sizzling aubergine with minced pork. Service can be brusque, so don’t be afraid to wave your arms around to attract the waiters’ attention.

“Get a table at this Roast Duck venue instead!” Though travellers from Asia including Hong Kong (and thats saying a lot when it comes to food!) almost always congregate and queue up for a table to have roast duck at the infamous Four Seasons just 2 doors away, it is just as worthwhile popping over to Gold Mine for exactly the same! Here you will much less likely be required to queue or wait and I believe the food and more specifically the duck is just as good. I have been to this restaurant for many years now and though it has to be said the decor and surrounds are plain and functional, the duck has always blinded any subversion I have had to the dining environment here. Another favourite of mine is the SzeChuan beef strips amongst others, whilst the japanese dofu is also exquisite. Coming back to the duck however, I would say this is the best I have had worldwide. I believe its because of the nature first, of British duck which is sufficiently “fatty” whilst achieving the right balance of succulence, and second because of the amazing sauce which I have compared to the qualities of Bordeaux wine, with a mystical depth and maturity. Anyway go try it for yourself with the knowledge that you dont have to queue up with the crowded throngs just 2 doors down.

With regards to the last reviewers comment I can see why you might be ignored and have slow service. This is a Chinese restaurant for Chinese people. I went there last week with my Chinese in-laws and the thing I've noticed from this and previous visits to Hong Kong, is that the polite way of British eating will leave you unnoticed. Try waving your arms and being a little derisory to the waiters. All perfectly normal I can assure you. On the food front, all pretty good really I'd definitely recommend it. Decor left a little to be imagined but don't get me started on that…

The food took over an hour to arrive. It was stone cold. The replacement dish was clearly microwaved, and tasted dire. When we complained to the manager he threatened to call the police! I have never been to such a bad restaurant in all my life and will never go back again.
