The brainchild of former chef Rachel Seed and journalist Lisa Richards, the GB Pizza Co started life as a travelling VW Campervan, before the duo bedded in at this permanent site hard by Margate’s historic seafront. Pink neon, charcoal-toned walls, scuffed tables and vintage metal-framed chairs set the tone, although everything hinges on the output of the centrepiece wood-fired oven. There are generally eight varieties of “fresh, fast, reasonably priced” pizzas on offer (plus weekly specials), ranging from the basic ‘Margate-rita’ (geddit!) to Wiltshire air-dried ham and rocket or pear, ricotta and blue cheese – all prepared using seasonal British ingredients from artisan producers. Ice creams are specially made by Gelupo in Soho, apple juice comes from Kent, and there’s organic wine straight from the temperature-controlled barrel. You can’t help marvelling at the “peerless feel-good ingenuity” of it all.
