This self-proclaimed ‘neighbourhood kitchen and bar’ is a great spot for a quick dinner and beer after work, but it’s also a wonderful place to bump into old friends or simply take a seat outside and watch the world go by. Frederiks’ unfussy interior has a well-stocked bar up front, polished wooden flooring, and walls enlivened by the odd quirky artwork. Food encompasses a mostly Anglo-American repertoire with the occasional international favourite thrown in, starting with brunches of full English, omelettes, bagels or waffles. Sunday roast dinner is a highlight, the beef arriving pink and surrounded by gloriously idiosyncratic vegetable combinations. Midweek, small dishes of plump Thai green mussels sit well with lip-tingling cajun king prawns, and both make ideal sharing plates – accompanied by a Brooklyn or California lager.
