A sociable but well-behaved local crowd is drawn to this casual bar, part of a three-strong chain. Balham’s Firefly is just off the main road, & thus away from the centre of the area’s tumultuous nightlife. Service is congenial, the drinks are in good order (if you avoid the ‘ghastly’ house wine), & prices aren’t frightening. Sit out on the well-protected roadside tables to watch the traffic, or head indoors for cosiness & warmth (the area at the back – complete with chandelier – is the nicest). Food comes a distinct second to booze, & the menu of burgers & sharing platters brings few surprises in content or quality. Visit early in the week for a sedate, quiet drink, but expect a lively weekend.
