Located in the town of Esher in Surrey, Fego is a neighbourhood cafe serving quality coffee, pastries, breakfast, and lunch in the style of South African cafes. After reminiscing over the non-judgemental, anything-goes ambience of South African cafe culture, where you could drop in for anything from a healthy breakfast to a sneaky burger and a sugary snack, the team behind Fego resolved to reintroduce the joy of uninhibited cafe living to the UK. Just don’t expect a rigidly South African menu to go with the laid-back style of hospitality - this is a globally inspired cafe.
To avoid the creative restrictions imposed by pared-down menus, Fego menus are broad in scope but never compromise on freshness or quality. For breakfast you can expect the likes of buttermilk pancakes with maple syrup, fruit compote and Greek yoghurt; traditional eggs benefits; and a light bites section with ciabatta rolls and granola. Also on the breakfast menu is a ‘Full South African’ - a strong competitor against its English counterpart - that includes grilled Boerewors, poached eggs, a crispy potato cake, chakalaka, sourdough and the uncontested champion of South African condiments: Mrs Balls Chutney.
As for the lunch menus, dishes include seasonal soup of the day, superfood salad bowls with cornflake chicken caeser, healthy ciabatta rolls with grilled chicken and avocado, alongside smash burgers and Korean chicken burgers. Fego Cafe also offers a kids menu, with a range of mini breakfast and lunch options.
Those with a sweet tooth need not be concerned, this cafe has its own bakehouse supplier producing all the fresh bread and classic pastries each day. But it’s not all plain croissants and cinnamon buns. The bakehouse supplies the cafe with a varied selection of unusual pastries like flakey New York style chocolate and honeycomb croissants, apple streusel muffins, and vegan banoffee buns.
