‘Almost there’ reads the sign, as Trinity Buoy Wharf finally looms into view & the DLR & A13 recede into the distance. It’s well worth the schlep, because this lovingly preserved, shiny aluminium diner joins London’s only lighthouse, a ‘Container city’ of artists’ studios & assorted cultural events as part of a fascinating day out for those who are tired of London – but not of life. Don’t expect some pastiche peddling ‘junk’ food at inflated prices; Fatboy’s is closer to its stateside cousins – homely, cheap & served with a smile. Live the American dream with an order of chilli fries, a malted shake, a slice of cherry pie & your choice of burger, hot dog, deli sandwich or all-day breakfast. Add tableside jukeboxes, Formica tables & neon signs, & you could be on the set of Grease.
