What was Walthamstow’s former waffle house has undergone a dramatic transformation and now rolls along as a trendy café-bar-restaurant where Tom Dixon lamps, crushed velvet pouffes, marble tables and wall-mounted antlers hold sway. It’s like a little bit of Mayfair pleasure palace Sketch in E17. Eat 17 may have pretensions to West End glamour, but it knows what its East End locals want: “the chef really gets some flavour on the plate”, notes one fan, and food is served all day – from brunch standards to casual lunches and smart, well-priced dinners. The kitchen works hard, delivering everything from fishcakes with preserved lemon aïoli or pork belly with pear, mint and charred cucumber to buttermilk-fried chicken burgers, duck meatballs with sweet potato mash or braised chickpeas with confit carrots, crisp buckwheat and burrata. Eat 17 is also home to the now-famous ‘bacon jam’.
