SquareMeal Review of Drink, Shop & Do

Bronze Award

A ground-floor bar dedicated to Spritzes is the latest addition to this quirky multi-purpose venue that still has the spark to make it a King’s Cross essential. In the upstairs bar – converted from a Victorian bathhouse/ bordello – order craft beers, bargain vino or tart tipples such as a vodka and lemon curd Martini. On ‘Do’ nights, entertainment veers from musical bingo or dirty Scrabble dating, to communal classes in belly-dancing or nipple tassel-making. Weekend bottomless brunches and afternoon tea are also covered, and for parties the staff will put on a fancy spread of food and fishbowl puncheons. DJs set a different mood in both the bordello bar and the basement gin joint where you can bop to old skool anthems until late-late o’clock. Retail therapy is still part of the picture: anything that isn’t nailed down, from baubles to 1950s table sets, is yours for the right price.

We've come for afternoon tea with a twist. Next to us a foursome are knitting unidentifiable woolly clothing. The menu promises a range of make-up and crochet evening classes. Waitresses sport victory rolls (that's a hairstyle not a pastry). Yes, we've just jumped on the nostalgia bandwagon stopping at the Drink, Shop & Do cafe in this forgotten corner of Kings Cross. Fortunately any time travel sickness can be relieved by indulging in one of the excellent cocktails; I recommend the gin based elderflower lime-y concoction I had. Afternoon tea came with obligatory cucumber sarnies and scones as well as a generous splattering of old skool sweeties. The decor is what you'd expect from this kind of place: all mismatched chairs and flowery plates. Service was friendly if a little haphazard. Prices are surprisingly reasonable: not quite 40s prices, but not as much as you'd think for somewhere achingly hip. If you're the kind of girl who wears teadresses, hangs out in Shoreditch and finds comfort in retro charm, this is the place for you. If you're a guy, forget it.
