Led by duo Thea Cumming and Lucia Massey, Doña is an exciting venture that is founded on the pair's friendship and love for community, music and Mezcal. The team are the brains behind Dangerous Don, Cuppa Gumbo, Slap Ya Papa and London Mezcal Week. This small but mighty bar on Stoke Newington High Street is a space that is proud to showcase powerful, feminine energy and creativity. Food is only served on Friday and Saturday, from 6 until 10pm, but the bar is open for drinks from Wednesday through to Saturday.
The kitchen is under the mastery of chef Karla, who has been inspired by her home country of Honduras, and has crafted a menu of Central American fusion plates. Sharing really is caring at Doña, where guests are encouraged to order a variety of plates to feast on amongst the table. You can opt for crispy plantain crisps or the fried tortilla chips with a creamy cheese bean dip and salsa. The empanadas come in options of chicken, cheese or veggie and are served with slaw. The tamalitos are made with corn and black bean dough, before being steamed in banana leaves, whilst the Honduran arepas are filled with creamy beans, avocado and salad. For a taste of tequila, try the Mezcal chicken skewers that have been marinated for 24 hours. Each week, there is a unique plato tipico, so you'll always be surprised with a changing dish.
There are many amazing drinks to choose from at Doña, starting off with the classic or spicy Mezcal Margaret. Some of the restaurant's favourites include the Julia, made with hibiscus mezcal and basil, and the Tenbi, stirred up with tiki style gin and pineapple.
