The Duchess of Devonshire has created a stunning contemporary hotel out of an unimposing Victorian building, emblazoning the interior with a wacky mishmash of jewelled colours, modern artworks & vintage railway posters extolling the joys of the area – much of it on glorious view outside. The lunchtime bar menu puts the emphasis on upmarket comfort food (battered haddock & chips with crushed peas, say), while the more formal restaurant serves contemporary dishes along the lines of caramelised celeriac velouté with seared scallops & apple jelly, ahead of local wild venison loin with celeriac pavé, braised salsify, parsley root, sauté sprouts, chestnut & pancetta. Young staff are well trained & intelligent, making this a perfect stop-off whether you are meeting up with friends or planning to stay over. Related to the Michelin-starred Devonshire Arms further down the Wharfe valley.
