Special Offers

Coniston boasts a surprising range of places to eat. Cafes offer homemade pastries, tea and coffee through the morning, often with outside seating for soaking up the occasional Cumbrian sun. As with much of rural England, fish and chips are a staple here so be sure to get your fill during your visit. These are typically takeaway only, so best enjoyed in the sun or, failing that, the car. Those who prefer more global cuisine will be able to find something to their liking too, as Coniston has its fair share of pizzerias and Indian restaurants too.

Cosy, dog-friendly inns are what Coniston is really famous for, with some pushing 400 years of service. These pubs often have rooms, meaning they also serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Stop in to sample some local ales and great gastropub food in a relaxed setting.

Aside from eating (although that’s always our favourite part of the trip), there are plenty of things to do in the Coniston area. Tarn Hows offers lovely woodland walks and lakeside stops before an amazing view of the surrounding countryside from the top, while the Old Man of Coniston has lots of great places for a sandwich by the streams. Hikers who are perhaps a little more adventurous can try their hand at Hodge Close Trail, which involves more climbing than the others.

For more great food, browse the best restaurants in the Lake District. If you’re in Coniston’s nearest city, be sure to check out these restaurants in Carlisle.
