From the team behind Six by Nico, Chateau-X is a French restaurant in Finnieston, with a much simpler offering than the complex menus of chef Nico Simone's previous ventures. Chateau-X is a traditional chateaubriand restaurant, and the menu is centred around the cut. Guests essentially have one choice of main - the chateaubriand for two - alongside a choice of sides and snacks, all influenced by beef in one way or another.
Moving past the obligatory olives, things get meaty quickly. Soja Bakery sourdough bread comes with whipped butter and crispy ox tongue, laying down the groundwork for the incoming meat feast. Vegans and vegetarians will struggle here, as seemingly every side has some element of beef, from the beef dripping chips to the beef fat carrots. That being said, there are a couple of vegetarian sides, such as mac and cheese croquettes with a chipotle emulsion, roasted sprouting broccoli with a buttermilk and tarragon dressing or barbecued Hispi cabbage with black garlic and aged ewe's cheese. True meat lovers can order the roasted bone marrow with oxtail and parsley crust, which comes served in the bone itself.
The main event is, of course, the chateaubriand itself. Fed on a sustainable grass diet, cows from various breeds including Hereford, Aberdeen Angus and Limousin are used here. What they have in common is that they are in the top 2% in quality on the market. Diners can choose from peppercorn, bone marrow jus, Béarnaise or meaty salsa to top their prime cut. And, as a truly generous gesture, dessert at Chateau-X is on the house: soft whip ice cream.
For those who like their steak earlier in the day, Chateau-X also does breakfast on the weekends. There is, however, only one option: flat iron steak with poached eggs, spinach, flat cap mushrooms and Béarnaise.
