Cowboy Roy Rogers once rode Trigger down the main staircase of the Grand Central Hotel, and the first-ever TV signal was beamed from London to one of its bedrooms – no wonder this city-centre megalith is a Glasgow icon. Designed in extravagant Victorian gothic style, it has played host to royalty, political grandees and movie stars – and is currently reaping the benefits of a £20m refurb. Original pillars, marble floors and a domed ceiling make Champagne Central one of the most glamorous spots in town for a glass of bubbly or a cocktail: vintage fizz from famous houses is the top call, while cocktails with names such as Sinatra, Charlie Chaplin and Mae West martini pay homage to famous guests. Nibbles, salads and sharing platters go down well, and the bar also does grand afternoon teas with all the accoutrements.
