About the size of your average newsagent, pint-sized Carnevale is nevertheless a real draw for City veggies – so arrive early or be prepared to find a space in the alfresco/conservatory area out back. The robust Mediterranean menu keeps it seasonal, opening with plates of feta cheese, green beans, fresh peas and salsa verde or roasted Jerusalem artichoke and pumpkin salad, before moving on to kibbeh stuffed with wild mushrooms, spinach and nutmeg, a quirky take on caponata or butternut squash risotto with roasted wild garlic and saffron. There’s a great-value, three-course set menu, too (£13.50). The wholly organic wine list merits a serious look, and it’s also worth eyeing up the fabulous array of deli products and hampers on your way out. They do sandwiches and hot takeaways too.
